Save money by paying your water bills by Direct Debit

You can save £5 each year from your water bill with United Utilities when you set up a Direct Debit payment plan. You can choose when to pay - weekly, fortnightly and monthly. Once your Direct Debit is set up with United Utilities your payments will automatically be paid out of your bank account - meaning its one less thing for you to worry about!

To set up a Direct Debit with United Utilities or for more information, call United Utilities on:

  • 0345 672 2999 if you have a water meter
  • 0345 672 2888 if you don't have a water meter.

'Help to pay' scheme for customers on pension credit

United Utilities operate a scheme called ‘Help to Pay’ which caps your bill at £250. This is aimed at customers who are in receipt of Pension Credit (either Pension Guarantee Credit or Pension Savings Credit) and are struggling to pay their water bill.

If your water bill is currently more than £250 and you meet the eligibility criteria with United Utilities, you can apply by completing the form contained within this link.

After the water meter has been installed and if you change your mind, you can switch back to a standard meter within 24 months if it’s not right for you.

Note - If United Utilities can’t fit a water meter at your home due to the property, you can choose to pay your water and wastewater services based on Assessed Charges instead of the rateable value. Assessed Charges are a fixed amount per year. The amount you pay depends on your property type, unless you live alone, in which case you may be eligible for their Single Person Household Tariff.

Fallen behind with water payments?

If you have fallen behind with your water payments, United Utilities operate a scheme called "The Arrears Allowance Scheme" to help you get you back on track with paying your bill.

You will need to contact United Utilities on their freephone number 0800 072 6765 to see if you eligible for the scheme.

If you qualify, United Utilities will match your payments £1 for £1 within the first 6 months, and then for every payment you make thereafter, as long as you continue to make payments in line with the payment plan, they will match every £1 you pay with a £2 allowance to your account until the arrears are cleared.

Trust funds to help with debt

United Utilities Trust Fund can consider giving some help to meet other essential bills, household needs or priority debts, for example, gas, electric or water debts.

Priority Services Register for older and disabled people

If you sign up to your supplier’s Priority Services Register (PSR), you can get extra help and support with your energy supply.

You can sign up if you’re:

  • a pensioner
  • disabled or chronically sick
  • have a hearing or visual impairment

Help you can get

If you’re on the PSR, you could get:

  • free advice on being more energy-efficient
  • protection from cold callers with a password protection scheme
  • your meter moved free of charge if it’s hard for you to use or read the meter
  • a free quarterly meter reading if you can’t read your meter
  • bills sent to a relative, carer or friend to help you check them
  • your bills and meter readings in a braille, large print, audio tape, textphone or typetalk if you’re visually impaired
  • advance notice if your supply is going to be interrupted
  • priority reconnection if your supply is interrupted
  • alternative facilities for cooking and heating if your supply is interrupted
  • extra help to use your meter or appliances
  • annual gas safety checks

Free gas safety checks

To be eligible for a free annual gas safety check, you must own your home and get a means tested benefit such as Pension Credit or Income Support. Also, one of the following must apply:

  • you live alone
  • you live with other adults who are aged over 60, disabled and or chronically sick
  • you live with at least one other child under five

How to sign up

Contact your supplier to see if you’re eligible to sign up to the PSR. If you have different suppliers for gas and electricity, you’ll need to call them both.

You’ll need to register again if you change your energy supplier.

Saving water top tips

In just one day a dripping tap can waste enough water to fill a whole bath.

Whether you want to save water and help the environment or reduce your water meter charges, here are some great water saving tips.

  • Reducing your shower time to around five minutes a day can save litres of water and £190 a year on bills.
  • Having a shower instead of a bath saves litres of water.
  • Switch off the tap whilst brushing your teeth or shaving.
  • Set a kitchen timer when washing the car, watering your garden, showering or brushing your teeth.
  • Use a nozzle spray on hosepipes that can switch on/off.
  • Wash your fruit and veg in a small bowl of water instead of under a running tap and recycle any water to water plants.
  • Reuse water from steaming or cooking for soup bases.Get a water butt for your garden to collect rain water.
  • Keep some tap water in the fridge instead of running the tap until it becomes cold.
  • Soak dishes and pans instead of running the tap whilst you scrub them.
  • Don’t use running water to defrost food.
