Villages wins at Chartered Institute of Housing Awards

Friday 11th November 2011

Villages Housing Association are delighted to announce that the Stockbridge Village Safer Communities Initiative (SCI) has won a Chartered Institute of Housing UK Housing Award for the "Creating Safer Communities" category.

The UK Housing Awards, established in 1997, recognise excellence across eleven categories and also present prizes for the most outstanding achievement in housing in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England and for the UK as a whole.

This win comes hot on the heels of Villages winning 3 National Housing Federation awards for the SCI, under the categories of "Best Impact on Residents", "Best Partnership" and "Overall Winner" for the North West.

The SCI is aimed at making Stockbridge Village a safer place for residents to live and work. The estate, built in the 1960s, has gained a bad reputation in recent years, with gang, gun and drug culture becoming more prevalent. Residents' trust in partners was also at a low point; therefore a partnership of Knowsley Council, Merseyside Police, Villages Housing and others launched the SCI in January 2010.

In the first 12 months of the initiative, from January 2010 to January 2011, overall crime in the area reduced by 20%, and reduced by 35% after 18 months.

CIH Interim Chief Executive, Grainia Long said "The judges felt that Villages Housing Association's initiative had been extremely successful in a very challenging environment, addressing difficult issues like gun and drug crime. They were impressed by the clear evidence of how much had been achieved as a result of this work, including very significant reductions in ASB and crime."
Sarah Bevan, Initiatives Director at Villages said, "We are delighted and very proud to have won this prestigious national housing award. This award is recognition that the work that has been carried out has really made a massive difference to this estate and to the lives of the good, decent people who live here; the results are amazing."
